Big Pine Key is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Monroe County, Florida, on an island of the same name in the Florida Keys. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,032. Big Pine Key is also home to the University of Big Pine, home of the Fighting Pine Cones. With the slogan "Nothing Finer Than a Piner", UBP is constantly growing and adding new courses. The most popular classes are: Iguana Wrangling, Spearfishing,Key Deer Grooming, Beer Pong, Mosquito Hunting, and Blue Hole Kayaking. University of Big Pine recently joined the Big Pine softball league in early 2015 and made it to the championship game! (GO PINECONES). Look out for the team this upcoming season at Watson Field! ==Geography== Big Pine Key is located at (24.686170, -81.360988). U.S. 1 (or the Overseas Highway) crosses the key at mile markers 29.5—33, one of the few places on the Keys where the road orients north-south (along the eastern edge of the Key).
